Summary

A major expedition from Punjab Police operated in the area of Lampak Group in Central Garhwal . From Joshimath they proceeded to village Ruing and to Kala Kharak where base camp was established at 4700 m. The team established Camp I at 5127 m for both the peaks that they were to attempt. Ahead separate camps were established for each peak.

Lampak II (6181m) was climbed on 7 th June by the leader, with 7 other members and Lampak I (6325 m) was climbed on 13 th June 2003 by the leader and three other members. Ascent of Lampak I was a major first ascent of a technically difficult, over 6000 m mountain of by an Indian team.

Summiteers on Lampak II were leader with Inder Kumar, Nari Dhami, Mohan Lal, Palvinder Singh, Kulvinder Kumar, Anand Singh and Sangram Singh. Summiteers on Lampak I, 6325 m, were leader with Inder Kumar, Nari Dhami and Sangram Singh.

The area had been visited by Bill Murray in 1950 and two other teams at least, as recorded in the Himalayan Journal . The leader has studied the locations of various peaks and nomenclature in the area. For full details please see leader's article in the forthcoming Himalayan Journal Vol 60.
